The nineteenth century witnesses the birth of a new type of lexicographical work: the encyclopaedic dictionary. In this work we will be focusing on these solutions and the context in which they took place. These doctors did not only report this undesired situation using all the tools they could, but they also tried to look for solutions in various ways, among which one stands out-creating specialized dictionaries, originally written in Spanish, where the meaning and correct use of terms would be stablished in opposition to those coming from other languages trying to compete with them. PALABRAS CLAVE: historia del lenguaje médico, diccionarios de medicinaĪBSTRACT: Spanish doctors first noticed at the very beginning of the 19th century the 'threat' that foreign medical words posed to the Spanish medical language, not to forget the boom of terms whose origins and ways of composing were not always right nor homogeneous. KEY WORDS: Spanish lexicography, history of the lexicon, dictionary of the Academia, catorceno. This article is aimed at examining how the word entered the dictionary of the Academia with that sense, and at determining therefore the suitability of its inclusion. By drawing attention to these usages, we can see that this word, included in the dictionary of the Real Academia Española (22 nd ed.), has never been generally used in Spanish with the meaning 'which is fourteen years old' ('que tiene catorce años'). ABSTRACT The present paper shows the different usages that the word catorceno has had in Spanish and this is done by means of textual documentation.
